3 Reasons to Get CEREC® Crowns
CEREC® gives you a more convenient way to go about getting dental crowns. It allows you to complete the process during a single trip to the dentist. CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics, and it allows dentists to manufacture restorations on site.
The traditional way of getting a dental restoration requires making at least two trips to the dentist. During the first visit, the dentist prepares the patient’s tooth for the crown by removing enamel from its sides. This leads to a better fit with the crown, which is cemented to the tooth.
An impression of the patient’s tooth is taken and sent to a lab where restorations are made. The patient is fitted with a temporary crown while they wait up to two weeks for their customized crown to get back to the dentist. They then come in for a second appointment, where the temporary crown is removed and replaced with a customized one. With CEREC, this drawn-out process is avoided, and the patient can get their customized crown in as little as 90 minutes.
Benefits of getting CEREC crowns
Dealing with a damaged or discolored tooth that needs a crown? Here are a few reasons that a patient should opt for CEREC crowns over traditional ones.
1. More convenient
One of the most popular reasons that people choose CEREC crowns over conventional ones is the extra convenience of same-day crowns. Having to take time off in a two-week period can be a major hassle for people with busy schedules and can even lead to lost wages.
With CEREC crowns, the patient’s tooth is fitted with a crown the same day that it is prepared. The dentist removes enamel from the patient’s teeth and uses digital images to make a 3D model of the patient’s teeth. The model is used to design the patient’s customized mouth guard, and the data is sent to a CEREC machine that makes the patient’s restoration in about 30 minutes.
2. Improved aesthetics
CEREC machines make restorations out of ceramic, which creates a natural-looking restoration. Ceramics share multiple properties with real teeth, like their base white color and translucence. It is almost impossible to distinguish between a restoration made out of ceramic and a real tooth.
3. Strength and durability
CEREC machines make restorations out of solid ceramic blocks, which are manufactured to a high level of detail. On average, restorations made with CEREC technology are about eight times more durable than those made in a lab. A CEREC crown can last up to 15 years.
