What Does Invisalign Do?

Considering Invisalign®? Many people are under the impression that Invisalign® is only used to straighten crooked teeth. However, it actually serves many purposes, including closing small gaps, correcting bite issues and straightening out crookedness and crowding in the teeth. Keep reading to find out more!

The purpose of Invisalign®

Below is a quick overview of Invisalign®, including what it is, how it works and what it does. This information can be helpful to review when looking into different treatment options.

Invisalign®?

Invisalign® is defined as clear aligners that can be fit for the upper or lower arch of teeth. The aligners are one single piece that is custom-created to match the patient's teeth. Over the course of treatment, the patient will wear many sets of Invisalign®; however, each one will be slightly different. Invisalign® aligners are removable, but they must be worn for at least 22 hours a day to ensure maximum results. Typically, Invisalign® treatment lasts anywhere from six months to a year and a half. The timeline will be identified during the initial consultation appointment.

Teeth straightening

The main thing that Invisalign® does is to straighten teeth that are crooked or crowded. A lot of people experience both types of problems as a result of genetics, poor oral hygiene with baby teeth or just pure bad luck! However, with the help of Invisalign® treatment, the teeth can be straightened out over the course of a few months and up to a year.

Bite problems

Originally, Invisalign® was used to straighten teeth only. However, over time, technology has improved, which has allowed for the treatment to be used to address other concerns, such as bite problems. Crossbites, overbites and underbites are all fairly common problems that can and do need to be fixed so that proper function can be obtained. A lot of times, these bite issues can make eating, smiling and sometimes, speaking difficult. However, with Invisalign®, a minor bite problem can be addressed and repaired.

Closing gaps

Another thing that Invisalign® can do is address gaps in between teeth. Gaps are often a result of genetic problems or shifting; however, they are much more problematic than poor appearance. Gaps can lead to poor oral health as they are susceptible to left behind food debris, which can lead to bacterial build-up, thus resulting in cavities or gum disease.

Invisalign® can close gaps over time, which can help straighten the teeth out so that they appear more in line and even with each other. More severe gaps may require more in-depth treatment.
